Social Media in 2011: We Still Have a Long Way to Go | Social Media Today - by Robin Carey
’m going to kick the crystal ball way ‘cross the room. Who in his right mind could have predicted last year that WikiLeaks would become a global brand, or that its founder would be facing charges of sexual assault in Sweden for failing to fix a condom? (Where is James Ellroy on this?) That Sarah Palin would end up with over 340,000 twitter followers? Or that Delicious would die? Rather than make predictions that serve social media in general and our business in particular, I’m going to share with our members, followers, “like”-ers and random lurkers some of what we’re noticing as a business and what we think should happen, even if it doesn’t. Is 2011 The Year of the Social Media Bubble - by Eric Brown
everal camps are starting to chant that 2011 may well be the year of The Social Media Bubble. I would not proclaim to be able to predict the future by any means, but it sure seems more probable than not. While having little experience predicting the future, we have had an up close and personal relationship with the real estate bubble. Developing real estate used to be a pretty fun endeavor, however the past couple of years of operating our boutique apartment rental business in SE Michigan has had more challenges than we ever imagined. But as with all struggles, there has been a bright side, a bubble burst quickly trims out the weeds and the low hanging fruit. (Added: 28-Dec-2010 Hits: 130 )

#1: Twitter Staggers, Trips, and Can Barely Get Up 2011 is the year that the darling of venture capitalists, Twitter, hits the skids. Faced with an inability to develop and implement a revenue generation model that actually works, and another year with limited return on investment, venture capitalists who have invested and own chunks of Twitter become angry and threaten to close the never-ending flow of fool's money. What Happens at the End of the Social Media Adoption Curve? - by Dana VanDen Heuvel
As bloggers and social media pundits, we’re often scouring the data from reports to get a firm grip on what's really happening in the worth of social media. We look at reports like Forrester 2010 Technographics research and the recent data from Pew Internet’s Older Adults and Social Media research study that showed that social networking use among internet users ages 50 and older nearly doubled—from 22 percent in April 2009 to 42 percent in May 2010 to see how the demographics track with the behavior. The most recent work from Pew tracks with the expected trajectory coming off of Pew Internet's social media adoption study last August showed the greatest growth in overall social media usage occurred among older users as well with one in four (26 percent) users age 65 and older now use social networking sites. All great points for the social media culture to be sure. All that having been said, it shows, as Geoff Livingston pointed out in The End of the Social Media Adoption Road and Jeremy Victor backed up with data in Has social media for business hit the mainstream?. We’re approaching the 'end of the adoption curve, so to speak in the world of social media. (Added: 23-Dec-2010 Hits: 118 )
