5 Ways For Small Businesses To Get In The Location Game - by John Jantsch
Location based check-in type services are this year's overhyped topic – with good reason. While you may not understand why someone wants to be the mayor of their barber shop, you do need to recognize the behavior that social location services such as Gowalla, Foursquare, Yelp! and Facebook Places represents for the local business. Shoppers these days are using the Internet to find everything locally and increasingly using mobile devices, services and apps to effectively bypass even the web to find a merchant. What that means is that local small businesses need to find ways to tap into the behavior and not necessarily try to ride the hype wave to Foursquare fame. Below are five ways the local small businesses can capture their own personalized version of social location behavior and tap what may be the ultimate online to offline combo to produce sales. 7 Tips on Using Location-Based Social Media to Boost Business - by Lydia Neptune
f all publicity is good publicity, what’s even better? Free publicity. And what’s even better than that? When the free publicity comes straight from customers. Location-based social media services, such as Foursquare, Gowalla, and Facebook Places are juicy opportunities for small businesses to get oodles of free publicity. That’s because these services allow tech-savvy, smartphone-enabled customers to spread the word about their favorite haunts by “checking in” to certain locations. Once they check in, they can leave tips, mini-reviews, and other forms of feedback that in many cases boost a business’s public profile. Though these services continue to be networking tools to let friends know where you are and what you are doing, small businesses are now using geolocation tools to bring in business. So, how can your business get customers gabbing about your awesome sweet potato fries, stellar lattes, and happy hour deals? (Added: 28-Dec-2010 Hits: 115 )

Why Foursquare Drives Business: What You Need to Know | Social Media Examiner - by Conrad Hall
For the first time in history, the Internet is focusing in on local business in a major way. And Foursquare is leading the trend. Instead of competing in a “global marketplace,” local business owners now have access to geotagging, local search, and location-based services. All of which make the Internet more useful to small business than it has ever been before. Imagine being a hotel owner with several rooms available at 8 o’clock one evening. You know there are a couple of big events happening in town and people are going to be looking for rooms to “sleep it off.” Because of location-based services like Foursquare and Gowalla, you can now advertise a special for those rooms to people who are close enough to take advantage of it. Would you like to offer a loyalty program to customers without having to print those annoying punch-cards? How about Foursquare for Business… Their free business program keeps track of all the stats for you and even sends you messages to tell you who your most loyal customers are! New possibilities are being explored every day. But before you jump in and start geotagging, here’s what you need to know. (Added: 28-Dec-2010 Hits: 122 )

Dear Foursquare, Gowalla: Please Let's Stop Pretending This Is Fun - by Jon Evans
It's a bad month to be Foursquare or Gowalla. Ten days ago, 900-pound gorilla Facebook announced Facebook Deals for Facebook Places (i,e., location-based coupons) and check-ins for third-party apps. A day later, Pew Research reported that, despite all the hype, the use of location-based services is actually declining in America, from 5% of the online population in May to 4% last month. Forget the fabled hockey stick; that's more like a broken pencil. Why? Because they're not giving us any good reason to use them. Look at their web sites. Gowalla proclaims, "Discover the extraordinary in the world around you." Foursquare says, "Unlock your city." To which I say: "Oh, come on" — and it seems I speak for approximately 96% (formerly 95%) of the population. I have no interest in enlisting in a virtual scavenger hunt, or unlocking merit badges — what is this, the Cub Scouts? — or becoming the narcissistic "Mayor" of my local coffee shop. Thanks for the offer, but I'm afraid I already have some semblance of a life. (Added: 1-Dec-2010 Hits: 76 )

FourSquare for Small Business: A Primer - by Jonathan Blum
Does your business need a mayor? Probably not, but knowing the tricks of this hot social media tool can definitely pay off. (However, this seems even more faddish than Twitter, but you decide. (Added: 23-Aug-2010 Hits: 210 )

Forget Foursquare: How marketers are obsessed by shiny new things - by Danny Whatmough
Yesterday, I blogged about our fear of change. Today, I want to talk about an issue that may, at first, seem contradictory. Because, while the world in general dislikes change as much as my cat likes having her nails clipped, many marketers simply love the chance to jump on a new technology and hail it as the best thing since sliced bread.Latest case in point:Foursquare. If I had a pound for every time I've seen a fellow marketer on Twitter talk about an amazing new Foursquare case study' or asked fellow pros about their best tips for getting the most out of Foursquare', I'd be a rich man. Getting Into The Foursquare Frenzy - by na
Many business owners are now relying heavily on social media to help market their products and services. You may already have a business account with Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn. You may also see that with these sites, your sales went up higher than you expected. But you should not stop there. People regularly think of ways to let them connect with others who share the same interests and you have to be updated so that your business can thrive. The latest addition to social networking media, which can help promote small businesses, is the Foursquare iPhone app. It is a well-known belief that the best marketing strategy is by word of mouth and Foursquare has it down pat. Most local businesses have difficulty in increasing their customer base and the reason for this is because of little visibility. Most consumers just do not know that a certain company exists. Unlike big companies who can pay for TV ads and other advertising mediums, small businesses have to contend with how their regular customers tell their friends that they actually exist (Added: 30-Aug-2010 Hits: 305 )
