Bacal's Thoughts On The Crowd: Blogging is a form of social media because it allows communication from one to many, one to one, and many to many, just as do forums, listservs, googlegroups and yahoogroups. However, the origins of blogging have been lost as it evolved from a personal journaling tool that arranged posts chronologically, to a general purpose way to post content without knowing HTML (a pseudo content management system). The result is that far too many businesses use blogs that are not set up properly for business purposes, or start blogs only to abandon them when they realize one has WRITE a lot to keep them current and vibrant. Blogging, per se, is over-rated for business purposes, BUT allowing communication with customers is NOT, however one manages it.

Articles:Treat your Blog as your online home - by Mark WhiteThere have been a number of comments over recent weeks (and indeed months) about the imminent death of blogging, to be generally replaced it seems with newer tools such as Twitter and lifestreaming. For a small minority, it’s possible that this may well be on the cards – however, for the vast majority, and particularly those using these tools for primarily business purposes, I would say that this prediction is premature in the extreme. Indeed, with the growing presence of social media as a marketing and comms tool in its own right, are we going to be seeing a decline in the role of blogging as one part of that? My answer is a resounding no and I’ll explain why. (Added: 20-Dec-2010 Hits: 205 ) The ROI of Business Blogging - by Chris Garrett In the last post in this series I explained my preferred approach to business blogs. Let's take a look at why you would bother creating a business blog. What benefits can you acquire by blogging? As you would expect, I am a firm believer in the benefits of blogging for business, but I do know that blogs are hard work and that puts a lot of businesses off or leads them to have a half-hearted approach. Business blogs are amongst the toughest type of sites to do well. I can't name a single blogger who does the whole thing perfectly, but that's fine because you don't need to be perfect to gain most of the benefits. Werner Vogels, the CTO of Amazon, apparently gave Shel Israel and Robert Scoble - authors of Naked Conversations, How Blogs are Changing the Way Businesses Talk with Customers - a hard time when they dropped by at Amazon to evangelise the value of corporate blogs. Vogels wanted hard and fast metrics to back up their arguments, and he felt they couldn't give them to him. But it also has led to a surge in lawsuits from those who say they were hurt, defamed or threatened by what they read, according to groups that track media lawsuits."It was probably inevitable, but we have seen a steady growth in litigation over content on the Internet," said Sandra Baron, executive director of the Media Law Resource Center in New York.Although bloggers may have a free-speech right to say what they want online, courts have found that they are not protected from being sued for their comments, even if they are posted anonymously. Some postings have even led to criminal charges. The Washington Post now links to bloggers who comment on their articles. Blogcritics posts wind up at Google News and Yahoo News. The downside that is now getting some press is something bloggers have known for a long time - people spend a lot of time at work reading blogs. Advertising Age reports that "U.S. workers in 2005 will waste the equivalent of 551,000 years reading blogs." It looks like putting up your emergency splash screen when the boss walks by so that the boss doesn't see you reading about boobies at FARK hasn't gotten past the boss after all. Advertising Age continues: "About 35 million workers — one-in-four people in the labor force — visit blogs and on average spend 3.5 hours, or 9%, of the work week engaged in them. Time spent in the office on non-work blogs this year will take up the equivalent of 2.3 million jobs. Forget lunch breaks — blog readers essentially take a daily 40-minute blog break." (Added: 20-Dec-2010 Hits: 219 ) New Survey: Are Blogs Still Important for SEO and Why? : Business Blog Consulting - by Lee Odden large number of companies are familiar with the process of starting a blog, but few have experienced the challenges of maintaining and growing a blog for more than a year. Understanding long term benefits is key to sustainable business blogging. One of the most notable benefits of publishing blog content, especially if optimized, is the compliment to search engine optimization efforts. TopRank’s Online Marketing Blog recently conducted a survey with 326 Corporate, Agency, Small Biz and Independent marketers. Long time readers of Business Blog Consulting understand the SEO value of blogging, however, we wanted to check in with marketers with a variety of blogging experience to see what their experiences have been firsthand. Considering how many news stories broke on blogs and Twitter, were analyzed and reported on by bloggers, and debunked on blogs over the past year, a segment of authoritative bloggers certainly has emerged from the clutter of the social Web. In fact, more and more of those influential and respected bloggers are being called to discuss their expertise and insights in various media outside the social Web everyday. pop (Added: 1-Nov-2010 Hits: 1398 )
